Evaluation

We created two, one hour shows for our music based assignment. One of them being live, the other being recorded. We decided to let The encore show be the live show as it fits in more with the theme of Children In Need.
For both shows, my role was P.A as its very important to be on time especially for our live show, as we was on a tight scehdule. i find my self at ease when i'm taking the role as P.A. The only problem i had was to keep quiet, and having to symbolise how long we have left rather than say it out loud. For the encore show, we had an extra camera in the room, so for entertainment purposes and for children in need, myself and amy danced infront of the cameras. This was all just for a bit of fun, but i understood that this was my assignment and i did take it seriously. For pre - production i created the Idents for both shows and got involved with any Cross Media i could. For example, i took a few photos of the team members at work to be placed on our facebook pages, i was acting in the Video features for The encore show and i directed and camera assisted the promo for the Tea and Toast show which is also on the facebook page. With the promo being on the social networking websites, this means that this is going to be watched mostly by our targeted audience (16-24).
The content in the Tea and Toast show, i believe could not be suited better. By having young presenters makes it easier for our audience to relate to both male and female. Features such as prank calls teenagers would find humorous. And by asking them to send in photos of their breakfast is all to do with todays techonology being able to do it on their phones. The music we had on this show was related to our audience as its all chart music which is listened to by many teenagers. With them being happy upbeat songs too, it gets the audience in the mood for the day because its a morning show. Idents were also very upbeat and happy, not just to attract our audience but to also change our audiences mood to a happier mood. The idents could have been a lot shorter and snappier as they only need to be short and sweet. I thought that we should have had 2 presenters rather than 3. The more presenters we have, the more chance they will speak on top of each other and the listener wouldnt be able to understand whats being said. I also think that sam sligtly took over most talk times and Adele and Amy had not so much, but they all had good chemistry. A few things that we could have improved on was coming into speeech idents and songs, the transition between all. The way this could be improved is for Ollie to officially give the presenter a signal to start speaking and that he makes sure that the levels are right up so its clear when theyre speaking. Because this shoe had alot of chat in it, we could not predict when any of the presenters would distort the microphones. The only way we could present this, is to warn all presenters if they were going to scream/be loud, move away from the microphone.

The content for the encore show was also very suited to the audience of 25 + women in particular. By having a female presenter speaking very maturely, this adds to the interpretation of the Elain Paige show we was aiming for. The music included in our afternoon show was all based around our primary research so its perfectly targeted to our audience because its what they wanted. The same applied to our features, and luckily enough we had a feature that linked to Children in need when our college went to Hairpsray at the hippodrome so we included this to our show. Mainly this show is where me and Amy had included our dancing skills to the camera. this is just for fun and entertainment purposes. We didnt have a soundbed on the Encore show, just liek the Elain paige as if it works for Elain Paige with the same targeted audience then it will work with us. The presenter being alone works very well, but listening to it back it does seem like she's reading, if we had a second chance, we would make sure that it doesnt sound read and make her sound alot more fluent.

I do believe both of our morning and afternoon show worked really well. Job roles given out to everbody was equal and fair and a lot of team work was given. Personally, i thought i should have took the role as P.A a bit more serious than i did, (but i couldnt help it than to be excited and dance!!!!!!!!!!!!!) but the shows reached their targeted audience.

One way of gettin feedback is to create another questonaire jus for around the college to ask them how the show went, what could have gone better, what they enjoyed etc, as the encore show was broadcasted round the college, so most students would have listened/watched it.

Features

Tea and toast

Prank feature

This feature is similar to Scott mills on Radio 1 as we have similar targeted audience. The idea of the feature, is to call up companies, and whilst on this call, have to mention 5 words that have been given to them in a conversation. This feature was pre-recorded, so its easier for me to do timings and just incase some of the content was inappropriate.

Know your lyrics

Know your lyrics is when a phrase out of song has been spoken to the contestants and they have to guess what song it is from. Because we had no buzzers as such, the contestants had to create their own buzzer by using animal noises. We decided to use millie to present this just to give the listeners a variety of voices. in comparison to our other feature, this ones going to be live, and was based near the end of the show, so its easier to wrap up for the P.A just incase we go over. This feature can also add audience participation.
This is similar to the program Never mind the buzz-cocks.

The Encore

Interview with musical theatre student

We had an interview with one of our students here at Stratford college to give an insight of where the career of a performer starts. Stratford college is well known for their facilities and ability to the Performing arts Industry so we thought we'd take this to the advantage.

Music reviews

We created this feature based on our Primary research, We asked the question, 'Would you like to listen to musical reviews?' and the majority of the public answered yes. This gives the audience an insight on which musicals are worth watching. Here is one Review Amy's done.

http://audioboo.fm/boos/211716-amys-musical-review -

What musical is this? (Online)

To add to our cross media, Georgie had created a feature where we had to act out some scenes from musicals and then we leave the audience to guess where the musicals from? We will place these videos onto facebook and then tag every team member to enlarge the population to view the video. It will also be on youtube. i participated in these videos as an actor, ( a very dramatic one at that) To find these videos search The encore show into facebook and youtube.

The Encore Show Treatment

Format

Live radio show to be broadcast for children in need.

Duration

1 hour

Intended audience

The primary audience for this show would be middle age women as this group of people enjoy watching and going to musicals, on our ‘test run’ we found that the ladies in the zone (ages 45+) really enjoyed the music and we got some very good feedback from them. However our secondary audience would be people of all ages as everyone enjoys musicals in some form of medium. We found that in our rehearsals we had lots of people singing along and dancing to the well known classics.

Style

As the show’s content is very similar to that of Elaine Page’s BBC 2 show we have chosen to make the style very similar too. We are doing that by having mainly music, a female presenter and lots of facts about each different musical. We also have a interview with a ‘actress’ which is also featured on the BBC 2 show.

Rationale

We believe our show is something different, a style that no one else had chosen to use for children in need. It will be a good ‘break’ from all of the current music and conversation. Musicals are for all ages and we play music that everyone appreciates.

Feasibility

We think this radio show is very feasible as there is such a wide audience for it, it is fun and exiting.

Budget

No budget necessary

Deadline

The show goes live on the 17th November

Treatment for The Tea and Toast Show

Format

We are going to record this show onto Myriad and also broadcast it on Ustream so there is an online copy available.

Our prank call feature will be recorded onto a Zoom mp3 recorder and edited on Soundtrack Pro.

Duration

The duration of this show will be exactly one hour long. We will be able to do this, as we will rehearse the show before hand and time all the links. Also the scheduler on Myriad will allow us to keep track of the time.

Intended Audience

Our Tea and Toast show is targeting an audience of 16- 24 year olds. The presenting style and the features will therefore appeal to this age group. The show will be broadcasted around college and advertised on facebook and therefore will reach our target audience.

Synopsis

Our show is going to be presented by Sam, Adele and Amy. As the programme is music based the main content of the show will be the music. We have decided to play tracks that are modern and popular.

We have two features for our show. Know Your Lyrics is when one sentence of a song is said and then the contestants have to guess the next lyric. We choose to have the competitors making an animal noise when they want to make a guess, as this will add another humorous element to the game. We decided to get Millie to present this feature as then it’s different voice for the listeners and allows all three presenters to play along and therefore create more of a competition. We chose this feature as it allows the audience to play along. This feature is going to be live, as this will create a better competitive mood.

Our other feature is a prank call one. Adele or Sam are given 5 words that they have to fit into a phone conversation. This feature will be pre-recorded so that it can be edited so that it’s shorter and all content is suitable.

The content of our links will be informal and relaxed with subjects such as what listeners are having for breakfast.

Style

The style of the show will be informal and chatty. As the show has three presenters it will be very conversational with hopefully some humour.

Rationale

We decided to do a show in the style and for this audience, as we believe that, as we fit into the target audience ourselves, we can create an enjoyable show for this audience. If the presenters are enjoying themselves then the audience will realise this and hopefully enjoy the show too.

Feasibility

This show idea is possible as there is an existing audience and they are easy to reach as the show is going to be broadcasted around the college and the students fit into the age group. The show should be easy to make as we

Budget

We will not need a budget for this show, as all the equipment is available from college.

Deadline

22nd October

The encore Running order/script

Good afternoon, my name is Esme, welcome to the encore show on stratcast.co.uk in today’s show we are going to discus and sample some of your favourite musicals. We are going to start our show with a number from the incredible musical mamma mia. Here is the cast’s version of _______________.

You’re listening to the children in need edition of the encore show on stratcast.co.uk. That was from the musical, mamma mia. Musicals have always been popular with any age group and there are more musicals currently showing in the west end than we have time to talk about but there is one show that has astounded its audiences for the past 25 years and last month performed at the O2 arena in London with a incredible cast of over 300 actors and musicians, from les miserables this is Stars.

Welcome back to The Encore Show with me Esme Horne that was Stars from les mis and Electricity from Billy Eliot. The producers of Billy Elliot have recently announced that they are extending there Billy youth theatre scheme into 2011, this scheme gives children a chance to show off their acting skills in their own production of the show which could lead to performing on stage with the cast in London’s west end. Moving away form London, our next song if from the Sound Of Music. Currently touring the UK the sound of music stars the nations Maria, winner of the BBC’s how do you solve a problem like Maria – Connie Fisher.

That was ___________ from the sound of music. You can see the show on tour at the Bristol hippodrome until the 7th December where the tour will move to Oxfords new theatre. Now we are going to move on to a more upbeat musical – something everyone knows. Oliver, hear is ________

This is the Encore show on stratcast.co.uk and that was defying gravity from Wicked. This year wicked celebrates its 5th year in the west end and currently stars Lee Mead, the winner or any dream will do 2007. This next song is from one of my favourite musicals – this is what a feeling from Flashdance.

Chicago was first seen in the west end in 1979 after spending 4 years on Broadway. Our net song is the opening to the show, performed by the character Velma and is possibly the most memorable song from the show. You’ve guessed it. This is the cast of Chicago with All That Jazz.

Welcome back to the encore show on stratcast.co.uk unfortunately we are nearing the end of our show but I am sure we can squeeze a couple more songs in.___________ is from a music that started in 1971 and was later adapted into a film in 1978. Grease started off in Chicago as a non-musical performance called grease lightning. Theatre producer Ken Waissman saw the show and suggested to the writers that the show might work better as a musical so grease was born and stole the stage in Broadway in ’72 and then in the west end in ’73. So here is it. __________.

We have now come to our final number is a well known hit from a 1987 film which was adapted for the stage in 2004. Before we play our final song may I remind you to tune into stratcast.co.uk tomorrow to see Stratford college does children in need live. And stay tuned today for ____________

Elaine paige

With our show being musical based, it would be a good idea to research into Elaine Paige as its a simular type of show.

Her show is based on a sunday afternoon to suite her target audience of an older generation, 30+. This audience wouldnt be that busy on a sunday afternoon as most of their audience would not have work on a sunday. Out of both radio shows, we have chosen our musical show to be in the afternoon based on this research.

The show is known as an 'easy listening' show so jobs can still be done such as house chores, or cooking the dinners.

Musicals songs has the appeal to people to be put in a good mood and gives motivation to whatever the audience is doing. If we had the choice, we would place our radio show on sunday because of this reason.

The pace of Elaines show is very slow, as information/news about musicals is been given out, so the audience needs to understand clearly. Slight projection is given out, but not too much energy to be confused with shouting. No pauses needed in this show as tension isnt neccessary. Her pitch is quite high, to give a happy appeal to the show, as everything mentioned in the show is positive so the attitude has to be too. This is also emphasised by her being female. It wouldn't have the same effect if it was a male as they have naturally deeper voices. for this reason, we have used a female for our show.

Cross Media

For part of this assignment, we have to include a cross media project involved in our radio show. For both shows, we have created email adresses and facebook & twitter fan pages. This is to widen the chance of aiming to our target audience. By having a facebook page we can create a full profile for the show with all the information needed, photos, promos and much more. So this is what we did.

As a group, we decided to make a promo for the Tea and Toast show. Esme had planned and had put it into a story board, Then myself and james bonder took our a camera to take to sams house to film it. Amy and Sam are the guys included in the promo as they are the presenters. I really enjoyed filming this promo and it will be put onto facebook once edited very shortely.

Search in 'the encore' on facebook to find these promos.

I also got involved with a online feature, 'Guess the musical?' This is to get interaction not jus from the radio show but from our facebook page too. Available on facebook now.

LOGOS for both shows.

Myself and Millie had created the logo for the tea and toast show. We thought we'd keep it a very simple look. Edited on Photoshop.
Emse created the logo for the encore show. Stuck to the theme of theatre. Edited on Photoshop.

Radio analysis.

BBC1 - Fearne Cotton

Fearne Cotton's show is a national music based chatty programme played weekdays from 10am - 12:45am. Targeted audience would be ages 16-24 as the presenter herself is very young and bubbly which comes across in her presenting along with guests and co presenters. By looking at the listening figures on rajar, BBC 1 which is where Fearnes show is based is listenend to by about 20%.

Its played at a time where an audience is either at work or college. College average breaks would be inbetween 10 and 12:45 in the morning so student inparticular would have chance to get to list to it, whether it's inside or outside lesson. The music used on the show is quoted as 'pop and chart' which is relevant for the audience.
With this radio show there is many features such as life web cams, this tells us that its DAB/ online platform for broadcasting. I had noticed there isn't a sound bed on Fearnes radio show. This could be due to the fact that the audience is busy working (basing that on the time slot) so they don't want anything extremely distracting.
Also to emphasise on the content. The pitch of Fearnes voice is very high which creates the genre being a chatty show, the mood being very happy and Fearne herself as a celebrity. The pronunciation of her sentences ends downwards which tells the audience shes telling a fact or a closed statement. The pace is just neutral, its not too quick that you loose communication, nor too slow that its person is bored. I would Round it up to about 3 words per second. She has a nice expressive projection to her voice. Radio presenters tend to confuse shouting, with energy for example - Tim Westwood, where as Fearne Cottons projection still manages to reach the audience without having to shout. Any pauses that are caused in her show are from either a catch a breath or to build slight tension, but because of it just being a chilled chat show, there isn't any need for many pauses. Teenagers see Fearne cotton as a fashion Icon as she gets involved in some fashion retail such as very.com and top shop.
By looking at the listening figures, this shows that BBC 1 is listened to by about 20%.

Asda FM

Asda have their own radio station which is targeted to about 18 -60 year old. From retired elderly people to students, all have to provide their own shopping whether they are at university or have a family to provide to, so it has a wide variety of audience. By having its own radio station it is able to influence their audience into buying any special offer deals by promoting them through the radio. This is also a good way of advertising. According to the guardian 'Asda FM became UKs number one radio station'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/feb/11/asda-fm-retail-radio

The pitch of the presenters voice is naturally very deep because of him being a male, but emphases his happy mood by highering his pitch. This portrays to his audience and makes the listener feel welcome and happy and are able to enjoy the shopping. Shopping is looked up as a chore, but having a radio store should slightly take your mind off the fact that its a chore and will become more enjoyable.
Slight pauses are used in the Radio show, Just to add that little anticipation on any deals they have in store. It makes the listeners want to listen a bit more so they clearly understand where and what the deal is.
The pace of the presenter will have to be quite slow. This is because the audience is already occupied shopping so they will need to hear slowly and clearly whats being said for them to
understand.
Projection is needed for the audience to understand what inparticular is on special offer.
As well as this, all different types of music is being played to suit their wide range of audience.
This is extrememly different to the other radio shows. To begin with its an Instore Radio station, and it can only be listened to instore whereas the others can be listened to Online as well as FM and DAB/Podcasts. The style of the shows are different because this is more advertising whats in store where as the other are more based around music and chat.

Tim Westwood - BBC1 Extra

Tim Westwood is also a national music based show but is very different to Fearne cottons and ASDA FM. Tim Westwood is an evening show every saturday from 9:00Pm - 11:00pm. Targeted audience would be also differ from both shows as its a lot more specific as the genre of music is Hip hop, RnB and dancehall. The audience would be from about 16-24 but have a high interest in that type of genre of music. According to Rajar in comparison to radio 1 and Radio 1 extra, because of the targeted audience being so diverse, this effect the listening figures, Radio one has 11,647(000) viewers where as extra only have 806(000) viewers.

His evening show is played in time for when people are getting ready to go out on their saturday night. The music type would be Hip hop, RnB and dancehall so alot of bass and beat to get everybody in the mood to go out and party, so its timing is very relevant.

Tim Westwood has many features, from having guests on the show to going out tot he streets and having shout-outs to his show. The shout out feature in-particular includes audience participation. There are many videos on the website which would be classed as online features. These are DJ's/MC's coming into the studio and doing a freestyle. There also some videos of interviews from Celebrities such as P-Diddy, Lil wayne and Eminem.
He uses an extremely low Pitch voice to emphasize on the style of his show being grimy and dark. The sound bed is also seems very deep, and almost scary to make his listeners feel grimy and calm which is the impact he wants to give. In comparison to Fearne cotton, it is the total opposite as she is very lively and bubbly.
The pronunciation of Tim Westwood words are very much in his style of show. Using words such as "DAWG" and "MY bROTHER" When speaking to his interviewees, adds to the Genre of Show whereas ASDA FM have to speak very formally as they have a wider Audience so have to suite a lot of ages. Fearne, just speaks casually as if she was in a conversation which again would suite her show as its a chat show.
Tim Westwood uses a lot of pauses in his show. Sometimes i see it as he's using it to take a breath and also to add a lot of anticipation to his audience. In comparison to ASDA FM, they use pause to hesitate the audience to listen what is on offer where as Westwood uses it to hesitate, what is coming up in his show, For example, Which celeb is coming on the show.
The pace of the show is slow to give that grimy feel to the show, although some songs are upbeat, they have a lot of bass so its sincere throughout. He speaks quite slow to add to the calm feel to it. Westwood uses a lot of projection and he tends to confuse shout with energy, When he's presenting, its almost as if he's shouting when he doesn't need to shout to project energy, This is where he differs from Fearne cotton as she doesn't shout yet energy still comes from her voice. ASDA need only slight projection just to make sure their audience understand properly what's deals on offer.
Tim westwood is known to be UK Best Urban DJ and quoted from eminem
"I'm a big fan of Tim, The guy is a one-off. No one does what he does".

Tea and Toast

This show is a breakfast Show playing chart music and including features such as prank calling. From our research gathered, our target audience is aimed at around 16-24 in particular. The show is chatty, informal and indirect, which is what will catch our audiences appeal. Our presenters will have high pitched voices, similar to Fearne Cotton's because its sets the mood of being happy. We'll keep the pace quite quick to keep the audiences attention as it is morning so it should make them become more alert. hoping to reach the audience through energy rather than mistaking it by shouting. Features included are very playful and humorous so this will involve audience participation.

You could..

The Encore show

This show is a music based show but with a genre of musical. It includes lots of facts about musicals and features such as reviews will be part of out show. This is suited towards our audience of 30+ as they don't want heavy loud soundbeds, and a presenter that is over excited and what our targeted audience may find, annoying. The pace of the show is going to be quite slow, as alot of information is going to be spoken and we want our audience to hear this clearly. Her pitch is going to be high as she wants to sound presentable and happy about what the presenter is talking about. Musicals are happy songs so therefore we want this to affect our presenters way of talking. Our presenter has a small amount of projection as our presenter has a calm feel to suite the audience so projection isnt ideal for this type of show. No pauses would be neeeded, as its a factual show and we dnt want any tension.

Production Techniques - Running order

Asa group we decided to all give each other a particular production technique and then link to each others

Running Order.

A running order is to prepare and organize the presenter of what items are going to run in, placed in a logical order. This includes, songs, idents, links, and content for the presenter to talk/discuss about. Timing is often used on running orders to keep the radio show on time without running over. When creating a running order, either on a document on a computer such as Celtx/word document or even printed, a lot of space is left for the presenter to make any notes on them. Here is a running order from ‘The Chris Moyles show’.

Friday 14th August 2009

The Chris Moyles Show with Vernon

06:30 - News and Sport

06:35 – Vernon and the team are broadcasting live from Edinburgh, the home of Scott Mills the Musical. Vernon recaps on his cameo role last night and is still excited about it all

07:00 - News and Sport

07:15 – Dave gives his report of the Musical shenanigans recorded live last night at Pleasance in Edinburgh

07:30 - News and Sport

07:40 – Vernon and Dave find out who was the better driver from their trip to Rockingham on Wednesday. It was a close call, but overall Vernon was the winner and, if there was no one else available, could be Schumacher's replacement.

08:00 - News and Sport

08:05 – Vernon rubs it in that he was victorious at the race track

As you can see there are times written on every item that’s coming up. I’ve noticed that some things are bold and some things aren’t. These are to make more important things stand out to the presenter, in this case, Chris Moyles. I had found this on the BBC website, so it does look more presentable than what it would look like on the desk in the studio. Where there are songs, when it comes to doing our show, we will be more specific and include song times so we could roughly predict how long our show will be and how much time would have left. The running order is also used for something to fall back on, to prevent dead air on the show. Depending on what style of show you are producing will depend on how detailed the running order is. For example, if it’s a chatty show, for the content, there will be little information where as if it’s a documentary or factual show, the information will be a lot more in depth.

Platforms for broadcasting - FM Radio

Sound energy travells through forms of waves. The frequency of sound levels is measured in Hertz and it measures the number of cycles per second. For example, FM is measured in Megahertz so an FM signal of 90.6 is the equvialant to 90,600,000 waves/seconds. Transmission is a process in FM radio. The broadcast source, in our case, the radio station, use antennas to send out the broadcast signal. On the broadcast Antenna, electrical charges up and down the antenna which then creates electromagentic waves. These waves are sent in all different directions and and then signal is recieved whether in car or at home.

The advantages with FM radio is that you can always pick up a station wherever you are in the world. The disadvantages is the fact that DAB and online radio is taking over by having more complex things such as Webcam, chat, Ratings etc.

1.Station bundle analogue audio signals

2. [digital]

3. Signals transmitted

4. interface and muti path distortion takes places where it bounces of objects and then recieves to the reciever a little later than the main signal.

5. Car and home radio reciveves signal.

Other Platforms

Shop Radio has an advantage of able to put any content that involves any stock instore to promote whats on offer. The disadvantage is that they have to go through the process of having a Lisence.

Online has a massive advantage as it can be used 24hours a day 7 days a week and you can listen/watch whenever it pleases the audience. It can also be viewed worldwide which gives more chance of a bigger audience.

Ustream is what we will be broadcasting on. Its easily accessible, and very reliable. The only con i can think of is that for one of our shows our target audience is n older audience which may not be as accessible or they may not have the ability to do so.
