Radio analysis.

BBC1 - Fearne Cotton

Fearne Cotton's show is a national music based chatty programme played weekdays from 10am - 12:45am. Targeted audience would be ages 16-24 as the presenter herself is very young and bubbly which comes across in her presenting along with guests and co presenters. By looking at the listening figures on rajar, BBC 1 which is where Fearnes show is based is listenend to by about 20%.

Its played at a time where an audience is either at work or college. College average breaks would be inbetween 10 and 12:45 in the morning so student inparticular would have chance to get to list to it, whether it's inside or outside lesson. The music used on the show is quoted as 'pop and chart' which is relevant for the audience.
With this radio show there is many features such as life web cams, this tells us that its DAB/ online platform for broadcasting. I had noticed there isn't a sound bed on Fearnes radio show. This could be due to the fact that the audience is busy working (basing that on the time slot) so they don't want anything extremely distracting.
Also to emphasise on the content. The pitch of Fearnes voice is very high which creates the genre being a chatty show, the mood being very happy and Fearne herself as a celebrity. The pronunciation of her sentences ends downwards which tells the audience shes telling a fact or a closed statement. The pace is just neutral, its not too quick that you loose communication, nor too slow that its person is bored. I would Round it up to about 3 words per second. She has a nice expressive projection to her voice. Radio presenters tend to confuse shouting, with energy for example - Tim Westwood, where as Fearne Cottons projection still manages to reach the audience without having to shout. Any pauses that are caused in her show are from either a catch a breath or to build slight tension, but because of it just being a chilled chat show, there isn't any need for many pauses. Teenagers see Fearne cotton as a fashion Icon as she gets involved in some fashion retail such as very.com and top shop.
By looking at the listening figures, this shows that BBC 1 is listened to by about 20%.

Asda FM

Asda have their own radio station which is targeted to about 18 -60 year old. From retired elderly people to students, all have to provide their own shopping whether they are at university or have a family to provide to, so it has a wide variety of audience. By having its own radio station it is able to influence their audience into buying any special offer deals by promoting them through the radio. This is also a good way of advertising. According to the guardian 'Asda FM became UKs number one radio station'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/feb/11/asda-fm-retail-radio

The pitch of the presenters voice is naturally very deep because of him being a male, but emphases his happy mood by highering his pitch. This portrays to his audience and makes the listener feel welcome and happy and are able to enjoy the shopping. Shopping is looked up as a chore, but having a radio store should slightly take your mind off the fact that its a chore and will become more enjoyable.
Slight pauses are used in the Radio show, Just to add that little anticipation on any deals they have in store. It makes the listeners want to listen a bit more so they clearly understand where and what the deal is.
The pace of the presenter will have to be quite slow. This is because the audience is already occupied shopping so they will need to hear slowly and clearly whats being said for them to
understand.
Projection is needed for the audience to understand what inparticular is on special offer.
As well as this, all different types of music is being played to suit their wide range of audience.
This is extrememly different to the other radio shows. To begin with its an Instore Radio station, and it can only be listened to instore whereas the others can be listened to Online as well as FM and DAB/Podcasts. The style of the shows are different because this is more advertising whats in store where as the other are more based around music and chat.

Tim Westwood - BBC1 Extra

Tim Westwood is also a national music based show but is very different to Fearne cottons and ASDA FM. Tim Westwood is an evening show every saturday from 9:00Pm - 11:00pm. Targeted audience would be also differ from both shows as its a lot more specific as the genre of music is Hip hop, RnB and dancehall. The audience would be from about 16-24 but have a high interest in that type of genre of music. According to Rajar in comparison to radio 1 and Radio 1 extra, because of the targeted audience being so diverse, this effect the listening figures, Radio one has 11,647(000) viewers where as extra only have 806(000) viewers.

His evening show is played in time for when people are getting ready to go out on their saturday night. The music type would be Hip hop, RnB and dancehall so alot of bass and beat to get everybody in the mood to go out and party, so its timing is very relevant.

Tim Westwood has many features, from having guests on the show to going out tot he streets and having shout-outs to his show. The shout out feature in-particular includes audience participation. There are many videos on the website which would be classed as online features. These are DJ's/MC's coming into the studio and doing a freestyle. There also some videos of interviews from Celebrities such as P-Diddy, Lil wayne and Eminem.
He uses an extremely low Pitch voice to emphasize on the style of his show being grimy and dark. The sound bed is also seems very deep, and almost scary to make his listeners feel grimy and calm which is the impact he wants to give. In comparison to Fearne cotton, it is the total opposite as she is very lively and bubbly.
The pronunciation of Tim Westwood words are very much in his style of show. Using words such as "DAWG" and "MY bROTHER" When speaking to his interviewees, adds to the Genre of Show whereas ASDA FM have to speak very formally as they have a wider Audience so have to suite a lot of ages. Fearne, just speaks casually as if she was in a conversation which again would suite her show as its a chat show.
Tim Westwood uses a lot of pauses in his show. Sometimes i see it as he's using it to take a breath and also to add a lot of anticipation to his audience. In comparison to ASDA FM, they use pause to hesitate the audience to listen what is on offer where as Westwood uses it to hesitate, what is coming up in his show, For example, Which celeb is coming on the show.
The pace of the show is slow to give that grimy feel to the show, although some songs are upbeat, they have a lot of bass so its sincere throughout. He speaks quite slow to add to the calm feel to it. Westwood uses a lot of projection and he tends to confuse shout with energy, When he's presenting, its almost as if he's shouting when he doesn't need to shout to project energy, This is where he differs from Fearne cotton as she doesn't shout yet energy still comes from her voice. ASDA need only slight projection just to make sure their audience understand properly what's deals on offer.
Tim westwood is known to be UK Best Urban DJ and quoted from eminem
"I'm a big fan of Tim, The guy is a one-off. No one does what he does".
